Balance sheet total (assets)
Everything the company owns, as valued at the balance sheet date.
The total of the asset side of the balance sheet: non-current assets (buildings, equipment, intangibles, long-term investments) plus current assets (inventory, receivables, cash).
Assets always equal equity plus liabilities — that is the balance sheet identity. So the total by itself is not a measure of wealth: a company with a billion in assets and a billion in liabilities owns nothing.
Valuation follows accounting rules, which mostly means historical cost less depreciation. A building bought twenty years ago does not sit in the balance sheet at its market price.
